A hurricane can cause devastating damage to a home or business. After the storm passes, the long road to recovery begins. That starts with filing an insurance claim. You might be tempted to wait until you have all the documentation you think you need in order to file. Do not wait! It’s in your best interest to file a claim as soon as possible, even if you have not documented the damage in full or know the full valuation of your claim. By delaying the filing of your claim, you can open yourself up to denials and delays from your insurance company.
Here’s what you need to know to properly file a claim:
Survey & Document Your Damage
First thing’s first: if you are going to survey and document your damage, make sure you can do so in a safe manner. If it’s not safe to proceed, wait until it is or contact a claims professional such as a public adjuster or property casualty attorney for help.
If you proceed, start documenting the exterior and interior of your home and other structures. Take LOTS of photos from different angles. Take video and explain the damage as you film. Lastly, use a notebook to create a comprehensive list of all damages you encountered. Be sure to include dates.
Next, you’ll want to use the same methods to document damage to your contents.
If you’re not able to document damages, hire a claims professional, such as a public adjuster or property casualty attorney, to help you with your claim.
Contact Your Insurance Company
Once your damage is documented, contact your insurance company to open a claim. You’ll want to make sure you call AND email them. Keep a written record of any and all communications to and from your insurance company.
